Rooted in the mantra “Dance is a sport – music is a weapon,” Leroy explores the parallels between movement and military discipline—where every step is intentional, every breath is part of a larger strategy. Inspired by the rigor of military training, the dancers—uniformed in exclusive Renee Renelle designs—activate garments as tools of storytelling, protection, and resistance. Constructed from mosquito net-inspired fabrics and tent-like silhouettes, the uniforms draw on the aesthetics of camouflage and survival gear—disguising vulnerability while revealing truth.
This activation of fabric speaks to Renee Renelle’s philosophy of world-building through motion and memory. Much like the military, dance demands repetition, endurance, and complete embodiment. But unlike war, its goal is connection—not conquest.
For many of us, dance has never been just art—it’s been a refuge. A ritual of healing, identity, and resistance. In some communities, movement has replaced violence, offering choreography in place of conflict, and rhythm in place of rage. TENsion and Release honors that truth, calling attention to the invisible wars we fight daily—within ourselves and in the world—and the ways dance continues to save lives, shape culture, and unite us in discipline, joy, and survival.
TENsion and Release by Leroy Pope is a concept that not only honors VIBES AFTER DARK’s 10-year anniversary but also speaks to the past, present, and future state of our world. It’s a reflection on how, through movement, we have continually found both one another and a sense of solace.
In times of pain, dance has always held us. While club culture is often dismissed as escapism, when rooted in intention, it becomes a site of communal healing—a ritual of release. From the ring shouts of enslaved Africans, to capoeira disguised as dance, to Chicago footwork, New Orleans second lines, and soul train lines—we’ve always turned to rhythm as resistance, joy as protest, and the dance floor as sacred ground.
No matter the era or the struggle, we’ve found ourselves dancing—together.
TENsion and Release is a tribute to that legacy and a reminder that movement is not just expression—it’s memory, medicine, and a map forward. This is a call for us to get together, get organized, and get aligned. There’s a shift happening. And like our ancestors, we respond not with silence—but with rhythm, with motion, with each other.
